Preventing & Countering Violent Extremism

The Policy Dialogue “Madrid +10: Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism” was held in Madrid, Spain the 27-28 October 2015. The conference was opened by His Majesty Philip VI and closed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon with almost 40 Club de Madrid Members and 250 international experts addressing the issues of countering violent extremism and radicalization from different angles. It was an opportunity to share national strategies and grassroots initiatives focused at developing credible counter-narratives generated at the local and community level.

The event included parallel thematic workshops bringing together representatives from civil society and NGOs working to combat various forms of radicalization and extremism, in which good practices, policies, tools and mechanisms with global and local relevance were identified.

The main outcome of the policy dialogue was the Global Consensus, a document addressing the prevention of radicalization and violent extremism while respecting the rule of law and human rights.
