The Policy Dialogue was held in Florence, November 23-25. It was hosted by the European University Institute and covered analysis and prognosis for every region of the world. Former Primer Minister of Ireland and Club de Madrid Member, John Bruton, has summarized in a recent post some of his experiences he had during the debates and reflects on some ideas about the current trends of democracy, specially in Europe. In his own owrds:
“I am attending a meeting of the Club de Madrid, an organisation of former heads of government working to promote democracy, in Florence this week. The question being addresses is whether, after the 1990’s when democracy was spreading widely in the wake of the fall of Communism, democracy and human rights are now in a phase of relative decline again”.
