Club de Madrid expresses its deep sorrow at the passing of Lionel Jospin, Prime Minister of France from 1997 to 2002 and a distinguished Former Member of our organization.
A key figure in European social democracy, Jospin devoted his life to public service and democratic governance. His tenure as Prime Minister was marked by sustained economic growth and significant social reforms, including the introduction of the 35-hour working week, measures to reduce unemployment, and landmark initiatives promoting equality such as the Civil Solidarity Pact (PACS) and gender parity legislation.
Throughout his career, he held numerous senior roles, including First Secretary of the Socialist Party, Member of the European Parliament, and Minister of State for National Education, Youth and Sport. As a Member of Club de Madrid, he contributed his experience and commitment to advancing inclusive governance and multilateral cooperation.
Club de Madrid extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the people of France. His legacy as a reformer and advocate for social justice will continue to inspire future generations.
