Ingeniera electricista de la Universidad de la República, donde también obtuvo una maestría en Ingeniería Matemática. Antes de dedicarse a la política trabajó en empresas como Siemens, Verizon y Gartner Group, además de prestar servicios a la Administración Nacional de Usinas y Transmisiones Eléctricas (UTE) y al Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Uruguay. En 2007 asumió como directora de la División Tecnología de la Información de la Intendencia de Montevideo. En 2010, el presidente José Mujica la designó presidenta de la Administración Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (ANTEL), cargo que ocupó hasta 2015. En marzo de 2015 asumió como Ministra de Industria, Energía y Minería, impulsando el desarrollo de infraestructura tecnológica del país, incluyendo la construcción del Antel Arena. En 2019 fue precandidata presidencial por el Frente Amplio y ese mismo año fue elegida senadora, asumiendo su escaño desde febrero de 2020. En septiembre de 2020 fue elegida intendenta de Montevideo, convirtiéndose en la tercera mujer en ocupar ese cargo. Ejerció como intendenta hasta julio de 2024, dado que renunció tras ser elegida por Yamandú Orsi como su fórmula presidencial. Asumió como Vicepresidenta el 1 de marzo de 2025, cargo en el cual ha trabajado por el feminismo, la innovación tecnológica, el desarrollo industrial y las políticas municipalistas inclusivas en Uruguay.
She holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of the Republic (Universidad de la República), where she also earned a Master’s degree in Mathematical Engineering. Before entering politics, she worked for companies including Siemens, Verizon, and Gartner Group, and provided consulting services to Uruguay’s National Administration of Power Plants and Electrical Transmission (UTE) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2007, she was appointed Director of the Information Technology Division of the Montevideo Municipal Government. In 2010, President José Mujica appointed her President of the National Telecommunications Administration (ANTEL), a position she held until 2015. In March 2015, she became Minister of Industry, Energy, and Mining, where she promoted the development of Uruguay’s technological infrastructure, including the construction of the Antel Arena. In 2019, she ran in the Frente Amplio presidential primaries and was elected to the Senate later that year, taking office in February 2020. In September 2020, she was elected Mayor (Intendant) of Montevideo, becoming the third woman to hold the position. She served until July 2024, when she resigned after being selected by Yamandú Orsi as his vice-presidential running mate. She assumed office as Vice President of Uruguay on 1 March 2025. In this role, she has championed feminism, technological innovation, industrial development, and inclusive local government policies.
