Es profesional en Filosofía por la Universidad de la República, y magíster y doctora en Ciencia Política por el Instituto Universitario de Pesquisas de Río de Janeiro (IUPERJ), Brasil. Es profesora titular de la Universidad de la República. especializándose en Teoría Política y Política Comparada. Fue consultora de Naciones Unidas y de ONU Mujeres. Entre 2005 y 2008 coordinó el Informe de Desarrollo Humano en Uruguay. A su vez, es autora de varios libros de ciencia política, entre ellos Democracia y desarrollo en Uruguay y Final de juego: del bipartidismo tradicional al triunfo de la izquierda en Uruguay, además de publicar literatura de ficción bajo el seudónimo Olympia Frick. Fue elegida senadora de la República por el Frente Amplio en las elecciones de 2009, para el período 2010-2015, y fue reelecta en 2014, ejerciendo hasta 2020. En las elecciones internas de 2014 fue precandidata a la Presidencia de la República, siendo la única mujer que disputó ese cargo, En 2025 volvió a ser electa senadora por el Frente Amplio, en alianza con la Lista 1001. Sus principales banderas son la equidad de género, el fortalecimiento democrático, la izquierda política y el debate académico sobre desarrollo y cultura política en Uruguay.
She holds a degree in Philosophy from the University of the Republic (Universidad de la República) and earned both a Master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University Research Institute of Rio de Janeiro (IUPERJ), Brazil. She is a Full Professor at the University of the Republic, specializing in Political Theory and Comparative Politics. She has worked as a consultant for the United Nations and UN Women. Between 2005 and 2008, she coordinated the Human Development Report in Uruguay. She is also the author of several political science books, including Democracy and Development in Uruguay and Endgame: From Traditional Bipartisanship to the Victory of the Left in Uruguay. In addition, she has published fiction under the pen name Olympia Frick. She was elected to the Senate of Uruguay as a member of the Broad Front (Frente Amplio) in the 2009 elections for the 2010–2015 legislative term and was re-elected in 2014, serving until 2020. During the 2014 party primaries, she ran as a presidential pre-candidate, becoming the only woman competing for her party’s presidential nomination. In 2025, she was elected to the Senate once again as a member of the Broad Front, in alliance with List 1001. Her main areas of work are gender equality, democratic governance, progressive politics, and academic research on development and political culture in Uruguay.
