Club de Madrid at The Trust Summit 2026 in Nairobi

Rebuilding Trust in Democracy and Strengthening Multilateralism

Club de Madrid Member and former Prime Minister of Mali Moussa Mara participated in The Trust Summit 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya, highlighting the importance of restoring trust in democratic institutions and strengthening multilateral cooperation.

During his intervention, Mara stressed that trust must be earned through accountable leadership, inclusive decision-making and concrete results that improve people’s lives. He also called for a fairer and more representative international system, with stronger African participation in global decision-making.

Prime Minister Mara also highlighted Club de Madrid’s ongoing work to strengthen democracy and multilateralism, including the Global Commission on Democracy and Multilateralism and the upcoming Annual Policy Dialogue 2027 (APD27).

Strengthening Partnerships for Global Public Investment and International Cooperation

On the sidelines of the Trust Summit 2026, Prime Minister Mara met with H.E. Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, and Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Korir Sing’Oei.

In line with the Summit’s objective of fostering greater democratic political trust both within Kenya and beyond its borders, high-level bilateral meetings between Kenyan officials and Prime Minister Mara advanced discussions on Kenya’s integration into the Coalition of Governments on Global Public Investment (GPI), while strengthening political engagement to support a more inclusive and equitable approach to international cooperation.

Discussions also explored Kenya’s potential role in championing greater African participation in the Coalition, fostering stronger cooperation between Africa and Latin America, and advancing efforts to reform the international financial architecture.

Prime Minister Mara also held a bilateral meeting with H.E. Selma Malika Haddadi, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, further strengthening dialogue and engagement with the African Union on international cooperation and multilateralism.

Following the Summit, Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Korir Sing’Oei, welcomed Prime Minister Mara’s contribution and expressed his interest in working closely with him and Club de Madrid towards a more equitable and responsive multilateral order.

Prime Minister Mara’s participation reaffirmed Club de Madrid’s commitment to advancing democratic governance, rebuilding trust and promoting more inclusive and effective international cooperation.
