It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our former Secretary General and dear colleague, Carlos Westendorp, this Monday at the age of 89.
Carlos was a central figure in Spanish and European foreign policy, and a steadfast advocate for multilateralism, dialogue, and peace. Throughout his distinguished career—as Ambassador to the European Communities, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador to the United States and the United Nations, and UN High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina—he left an enduring mark on international diplomacy.
At Club de Madrid, his commitment to democratic values and his spirit of service greatly enriched both our work and our community. Those of us who had the privilege to work with him will always remember his insight, dedication, and humanity.
