Claudia Ortíz Menjívar

Diputada, Asamblea Legislativa de El Salvador | Member of the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador

She is a lawyer who graduated from the José Simeón Cañas Central American University (UCA) and holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from the same institution. For twelve years, she worked at the National Foundation for Development (FUNDE) as a researcher on transparency, accountability, and citizen participation. She also coordinated civic education projects involving more than 80 youth organizations across Central America. In 2021, she was elected to the Legislative Assembly representing San Salvador as the sole representative of the Vamos party, in a legislature dominated by Nuevas Ideas, the party of President Nayib Bukele. From the outset, she became the leading opposition voice, using legislative committees to scrutinize public spending. During the 2021–2024 legislative term, she served on the Justice and Human Rights Committee, the Women and Gender Equality Committee, and the Family, Children, Older Adults, and Persons with Disabilities Committee. In 2024, she was re-elected, receiving the highest number of votes among all opposition candidates in the capital. She is the only opposition legislator to be re-elected in an Assembly under the complete control of the ruling party. For the 2024–2027 legislative term, she serves on the Technology, Tourism, and Innovation Committee. She has participated in numerous demonstrations alongside political and civil society organizations, expressing her opposition to what she views as the authoritarian direction of President Nayib Bukele’s government. Her main areas of work are human rights, minority rights, environmental protection, and institutional transparency.
