In this mission Buzek met with Prime Minister Ali Zeidan to discuss Libya’s democratic transition and the way the international community as well as the European Union can provide guidance and help on building democratic institutions. Buzek, who was also the European Parlament President from 2009 and 2012, was the head of the Club de Madrid delegation that, with the support of the European Union, supported the democratic proccess in Libya. Buzek met with Foreign and International Cooperation Minister Muhamed Abdulaziz and with the President of the General National Congress, Mohamed Magarief. Also, he was given a presentation by Congressman Sulaiman Zubi from Benghazi on last July’ elections.
In addition to democracy building, the talks in Libya were focused on constitution drafting, women political, social and economic particpation, security, human rights and transitional justice and Libyan economic reform and diversification as well as potential international investment in the country. Buzek’s was the second top-level Club de Madrid’s mission to Libya. The first, led by former Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok, was in June 2012.
