Médica cardióloga y lideresa socialista uruguaya. Fue electa senadora de la República durante cuatro períodos consecutivos, entre 2000 y 2013 representó al Parlamento de Uruguay en 29 asambleas de la Unión Interparlamentaria Mundial, y en 2006 presidió tanto el Grupo Latinoamericano de esa organización como el Comité de Coordinación de la Reunión de Mujeres Parlamentarias. Presidió el Frente Amplio entre 2012 y 2015, y fue secretaria general del Partido Socialista de Uruguay entre 2016 y 2019. A lo largo de su trayectoria ha trabajado por la justicia social, la igualdad de género y los derechos humanos, siendo una de las impulsoras de la Ley de Interrupción Voluntaria del Embarazo en Uruguay. En el 2025 asumió como directora del Instituto Nacional de las Mujeres (INMUJERES), del Ministerio de Desarrollo Social, tras ser designada por el ministro Gonzalo Civila. como Delegada Titular de Uruguay ante la Comisión Interamericana de Mujeres (CIM) de la OEA, en 2026 fue electa presidenta del Comité Directivo de la CIM para el período 2026-2029, en el marco de la 40ª Asamblea de Delegadas del organismo en Washington D.C. Sus principales banderas son los derechos reproductivos, la igualdad de género, la autonomía económica de las mujeres y el fortalecimiento de la democracia y los derechos humanos en la región.
She is a cardiologist and a Uruguayan Socialist leader. She served as a Senator of the Republic of Uruguay for four consecutive terms. Between 2000 and 2013, she represented the Uruguayan Parliament at 29 assemblies of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). In 2006, she chaired both the Latin American Group of the IPU and the Coordinating Committee of the Meeting of Women Parliamentarians. She served as President of the Broad Front (Frente Amplio) from 2012 to 2015 and as Secretary General of the Socialist Party of Uruguay from 2016 to 2019. Throughout her career, she has championed social justice, gender equality, and human rights, and was one of the leading advocates for Uruguay’s Voluntary Termination of Pregnancy Law. In 2025, she was appointed Director of the National Women’s Institute (INMUJERES) within the Ministry of Social Development, following her appointment by Minister Gonzalo Civila. She also serves as Uruguay’s Principal Delegate to the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) of the Organization of American States (OAS). In 2026, during the 40th Assembly of Delegates held in Washington, D.C., she was elected President of the CIM Executive Committee for the 2026–2029 term. Her main areas of work are reproductive rights, gender equality, women’s economic empowerment, and strengthening democracy and human rights across the region.
