Club de Madrid actively participated in the Third Forum on Human Rights Defenders in Environmental Matters, held from April 7 to 10 in St. Kitts and Nevis. The forum was organized by the Secretariat of the Escazú Agreement at ECLAC, in collaboration with the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis and various United Nations agencies. Our participation was very positive and allowed us to make significant progress in strengthening strategic partnerships across the region.
During the event, we had the opportunity to present the Leaders Network for Environmental Activists and Defenders (LEAD), which was very well received by institutional representatives and civil society actors.
We also held bilateral meetings with several governments that are signatories to the Escazú Agreement, including the host country, St. Kitts and Nevis.
Throughout the forum, we also strengthened our relationship with the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and reaffirmed our commitment to supporting its efforts to promote the ratification and implementation of the Escazú Agreement throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Additionally, we established closer ties with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in the region, with the goal of reinforcing collaboration on the protection of environmental human rights defenders.
Finally, we connected with several environmental defender organizations, with whom we will begin collaborative work within the framework of LEAD in preparation for COP30, building a regional network committed to environmental justice and human rights.
This participation reaffirms Club de Madrid’s strong commitment to strengthening democracy, environmental protection, and the defense of human rights in Latin America and the Caribbean.
