The Working Group on Sustainability and Shared Societies presents its output document at the UN

The meeting was intended to develop a plan of action to identify strategies to enhance the effective implementation of Agenda 2030, establishing and strengthening networks, identifying target events to promote de plan, and link the findings of the Working Group on Environmental Sustainability and Shared Societies with other efforts and initiatives to ensure the achievement of Agenda 2030 in all its aspects. The meeting took place at the UN Environment NY Office and counted with the participation of Jamil Ahmad, Deputy Director, New York Office, UNEP and Member of the Working Group together with David Miller.

During the discussion, Minister Gutiérrez asked

“What kind of instruments and tools do we need to ensure we are on the right track?”,

And David Miller answered “Everyone needs to be part of building systems that ensure that no one will be left behind.”

The presented report is the result of the deliberations of the Working Group on Sustainability and Shared Societies convened by World Leadership Alliance – Club de Madrid (WLA – CdM) through its Shared Societies Project. Society and the environment, together with the economy, have been identified as the three pillars of sustainable development. Given that the Shared Societies Project had already examined the economic dimension, this Working Group examined in detail the way in which all three are inextricably bound together.

As the Working Group noticed, people will be left behind if they are not involved in the decision making and planning; people are a part of the future and have a stake in it that is why everyone has to play their part if Agenda 2030 is to be achieved.

The Key Messages of the Working Group are the following:

And the tasks identified to achieve the Agenda 2030 are: Strengthen Agenda 2030, Extend Agenda 2030, Put participation and inclusion at the heart of the process of meeting the goals of Agenda 2030, Support the ongoing efforts to review the capacity of current economic and development paradigms to provide adequate frameworks for the achievement of Agenda 2030, and Initiate a process to review the capacity of current global governance systems to facilitate achievement of Agenda 2030.

The working group and its document represent a consensus between what we normally seen as different interests. They called for Shared values, Shared Leadership and Shared Responsibility for a Shared Future. In here “Sharing” is a dynamic concept where people work together for the common good.

The Working Group was led by two Members of WLA – CdM, Laura Chinchilla and Zlatko Lagumdzija, representatives of governments, intergovernmental agencies, private sector, environmental agencies, representatives of indigenous peoples, and grass roots activists.

The Shared Societies Project and WLA – CdM as a whole are committed to engage with others to ensure that Agenda 2030 is implemented effectively and fully.
