Today is the International Human Rights Day!

Since its creation 13 years ago, the Club de Madrid has devoted the wisdom, experience and energy of its Members, all of them democratically elected Presidents and Prime Ministers from all over the world, to fostering democratic values and therefore to the direct implementation of one of the most beautiful sentences ever written: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”. Club de Madrid and its Members stands firmly by its commitment for a democracy one that assures human rights for all and defends the “four freedoms” proposed by Franklin D. Roosevelt in his vision for a better future and that underlie the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; freedom of speech, of religion, from want, and from fear.

As the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein has said, “the power of the Universal Declaration is the power of ideas to change the world”. We can say that if ideas can change the world, democracy can make it a better and fairer place for all. Everyday should be an International Day for Human Rights. That’s why the Club de Madrid renews day after day its commitment to protect and foster human rights throughout the world and thus relentlessly pursue the goal on the global achievement of a democracy that delivers.
