In the latest edition of Conversations for Change by The Stork, our Advisor Manuel Muñiz, the newly appointed Chair of the Board of IE New York College and Provost at IE University, delves into the current global landscape and the contemporary challenges facing democracy. Drawing on his experience as the former Secretary General at Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2020) and advisor to Club de Madrid, Muñiz explores critical issues such as the erosion of trust in democracy, the rise of authoritarian regimes, and the implications of a multipolar world on the international order.
Muñiz highlights the vital role of organisations such as Club de Madrid, which brings together former global leaders to promote peace and human rights. He argues that the increasing fragmentation of global power, illustrated by China’s ascension and the presence of other non-democratic actors, poses a threat to democratic values. Additionally, he emphasises the need to revitalise democracies from within, encouraging civic participation and addressing social inequality, which he identifies as a root cause of nationalism and populism.
In the face of these challenges, Muñiz urges citizens, particularly younger generations, to play an active role in defending human rights and the common good—whether through public service, the private sector, or non-governmental organisations. He underscores the importance of fostering a “culture of responsibility” to address these pressing global issues.
