Live Session: Securing a People’s Vaccine – Perspectives from the Global South

COVID-19 has cast a shadow over our ability to act together and tackle global challenges. Now we have a new opportunity to demonstrate that we are capable of coordinating a strong, resilient, green and inclusive recovery. This will not be possible if billions of citizens in low-and-middle-income countries are left waiting in line for a vaccine.

Club de Madrid, together with UNAIDS, aims to present to the global community a realistic strategy that ensures a fair and universal access to vaccines. It will bring particular attention to the challenges that low-and-middle-income countries face when it comes to a global and equitable vaccination process.

Drawing from our learned lessons tackling previous infectious diseases, health experts and Club de Madrid Members will introduce concrete recommendations and a course of action to secure global and fair access to vaccines, our best asset to put an end to the pandemic and ensure a far-reaching recovery.

Join our efforts to secure a vaccine that is universal and accessible to all. Let’s make it a ‘People’s Vaccine’!

A People’s Vaccine

Faced with wealthy nations and donors who dominate global health policy-making, billions of people in the developing world will be left waiting until 2024 to receive Covid-19 vaccinations.

Vaccination is progressing fast in the developed world, but much remains to be done if we want to reach global immunisation. This is why our Call to Action ‘Multilateralism Must Deliver‘ urges that a vaccine must be produced “at scale” and distributed worldwide “at an affordable cost”. The same resulting document from our 2020 Policy Dialogue calls for a sustained commitment to resources in an effort to push for strong and inclusive health systems.
