Political Career:

After receiving his degree, Suárez occupied various positions in the State Administration, including Civil Governor of Segovia from 1968 to 1969, Chief of the First Section of the Civil Government and Procurator of the Courts of Avila, Chief of the Technical Cabinet of the General Vice Secretary of the Movement, and Vice Secretary and Secretary General Minister of the Movement.

In 1976 he was named National Counselor of the Movement and nominated President of the Government by the King Don Juan Carlos I. He was charged with taking the necessary steps to help Spain transition to a democratic constitutional monarchy. Accordingly, his government initiated many changes such as the Law of Political Reform of 1976.

In 1977, after winning the elections, Suárez was nominated President of the Government for the Union of Democratic Center (UCD) party. In 1978 the Spanish Constitution was approved and he was reelected President of the Government in the elections of 1979.

Suárez resigned from the UCD and as President of the Government of Spain in 1981.

In 1982 he founded the Democratic and Social Center (CDS) party and was elected Deputy to Congress in 1982 and 1986.

He retired from active politics in 1991 and has since devoted himself to practicing law.

In 1996 the Prince of Asturias honored him with the Concord Prize in recognition of his political leadership during the Spanish transition and his important personal contributions to democracy in Spain.
