Club de Madrid at CSW69 & Beijing +30: A Defining Moment for Gender Equality

The 69th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) is actively taking place in New York (March 10-21, 2025), marking a crucial milestone: 30 years since the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. This landmark agenda, adopted in 1995 by 189 countries, remains the most ambitious global blueprint for women’s rights and gender equality.

Representing Club de Madrid, Vice President and President of Chile (2006-2010 y 2014-2018), Michelle Bachelet, brought her unwavering commitment to gender equality and women’s leadership to the discussion in the Side Event: 30 Years of Women’s Political Participation, Towards Full Parity. The event was co-organized by the Permanent Mission of Slovenia to the UN and Club de Madrid, with the support of the Permanent Mission of Spain to the UN and GWL Voices.

Why is CSW69 important?

This year’s session is dedicated to assessing global progress, identifying persistent gaps, and accelerating action. The world has seen achievements in legal frameworks, women’s leadership, and access to education, but challenges remain. There is still gender-based violence, economic disparities, and threats to sexual and reproductive rights persist in many regions.

Key discussions at CSW69:

  • Beijing+30 Review: Evaluating the successes and setbacks of the past three decades.
  • A Global Political Declaration: Governments are negotiating commitments to strengthen policies on gender equality.
  • Women’s Economic Empowerment: Addressing the gender pay gap and unpaid care work.
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights (SRHR): Advocating for universal access to healthcare and legal protections.
  • Tackling Gender-Based Violence: Strengthening laws and protections for women and girls worldwide.
  • The Role of Civil Society & Youth: Ensuring grassroots voices shape the future of gender equality.

As CSW69 continues, the global community must move beyond words and deliver concrete actions to close gender gaps. The Beijing+30 milestone is not just a reflection, it is a call to action.
