Club de Madrid expresses its deep sorrow at the passing of Yasuo Fukuda, Prime Minister of Japan from 2007 to 2008 and a distinguished Member of our organization.
A respected figure in Japanese politics, Fukuda dedicated much of his career to public service, diplomacy and international cooperation. Before becoming Prime Minister, he served as Chief Cabinet Secretary and held several senior positions in Japan’s political institutions.
During his tenure as Prime Minister, he worked to strengthen Japan’s diplomatic relations, particularly with China, and hosted the 2008 G8 Summit in Hokkaido, where international cooperation and global challenges, including climate change, featured prominently on the agenda.
Throughout his political career and beyond, Fukuda remained committed to dialogue and constructive engagement as essential foundations for international understanding.
As a Member of Club de Madrid, he brought valuable experience and a longstanding commitment to democratic governance, dialogue and multilateral cooperation.
Club de Madrid extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the people of Japan. His legacy of public service and dedication to international cooperation will continue to inspire future generations.
