Wealth, Power and Democracy: Progressive Taxation to Protect Democratic Institutions

🗓 Wednesday, 15 October 2025 | 3:00–5:30 PM (ET)
📍 Open Society Foundations Offices, Washington, D.C.
Hosted and co-sponsored by: Open Society Foundations (OSF)
Co-sponsors: ICRICT, Oxfam, Patriotic Millionaires, European Tax Observatory, Club de Madrid, Tax Justice Network Africa, CESR, GI-ESCR, ANND, German Watch, and FES

In an era of extreme wealth concentration and democratic erosion, this high-level dialogue will explore how progressive taxation can serve as both a tool for fiscal justice and a safeguard for democratic governance. The event will showcase ongoing global and regional initiatives—such as the Seville Platform for Action and the G20 Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts—that aim to make the taxation of high-net-worth individuals a political reality.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Fernando Haddad, Minister of Finance, Brazil

  • Carlos Cuerpo, Minister of Economy, Trade and Business, Spain

  • Lars Klingbeil, Minister of Finance, Germany

  • Joseph Stiglitz, Co-Chair, ICRICT

  • Mahdi Jomaa, Former Prime Minister of Tunisia and Member, Club de Madrid

  • Erica Payne, Patriotic Millionaires
Moderators: Senior journalists and experts from ICRICT, IMF, and Oxfam

This panel will convene global policymakers, economists, civil society leaders, and media representatives to build momentum for fiscal reform and reinforce the link between economic equity and democratic integrity.
