Club de Madrid expresses its deep concern over the travel ban imposed on Club de Madrid Board Member and former Prime Minister of Mali, Moussa Mara.
On 21July 2025, PM Mara was prevented from traveling to Senegal, where he was to deliver the keynote address at the 6th Regional Dialogue on Peace and Security in the Sahel and Sahara, organised by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung. This reportedly happened without prior notice or judicial ruling.
PM Mara has consistently demonstrated his commitment to democratic governance, peacebuilding and pluralism in Mali and beyond. Attempts to silence independent voices through coercive measures threaten democratic space and regional stability.
Club de Madrid calls on the Malian authorities to immediately lift the travel restrictions imposed on PM Mara, to provide legal clarity on measures taken and to ensure full respect for fundamental and constitutional rights and obligations, including those of freedom of movement and freedom of expression.
