Laura Chinchilla, new Co-Chair of the Inter-American Dialogue

This is a communiqué by the Inter-American Dialogue on the appointment of Club de Madrid (CdM) Vice-President, Laura Chinchilla as Co-Chair of the organization:

“The Inter-American Dialogue’s Board of Directors has just announced that at its meeting on October 30, 2018 it voted unanimously to appoint Laura Chinchilla, Vice-President of CdM, and Ambassador Thomas A. Shannon, Jr. as the new Latin American and US co-chairs of the Board. Shannon and Chinchilla will replace Ambassador Carla Hills and President Ernesto Zedillo, a CdM Member himself; the outgoing co-chairs.

“I am extremely grateful for Ambassador Hills’ and President Zedillo’s leadership throughout the years,” said Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue. “During their tenure the Dialogue achieved critical milestones; they leave our organization stronger and better prepared to fulfill its mission and confront major hemispheric challenges.”

President Chinchilla brings significant public policy experience to her role as co-chairs. She served as the 46th president of Costa Rica from 2010-2014, the first woman president of her country. Before that, she was vice president and minister of justice from 2006-2008 and from 2002-2006 she served in the National Assembly.

The new co-chairs of the Dialogue will begin their tenure in January 2019.”
