Statement of the Club de Madrid on the coup d’état in Mali

Members of the Club de Madrid, all former democratic Heads of State and Government, are aware of the progress made in the past 20 years towards the consolidation of electoral democracy and the resolution of conflict through political dialogue in Mali; as well as of the on-going armed conflict in its Northern regions.

However, this coup poses a serious threat not only to the territorial integrity of Mali and the regional integration process, but also to international peace and security.

The Club de Madrid calls on all parties to show responsibility to ensure respect for human dignity, democratic principles and the integrity of the country and to guarantee the immediate restoration of constitutional order and the effective holding of the impending democratic elections.

The Members of the Club de Madrid support efforts made in this respect by the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) and are ready to contribute in any necessary manner to ensure the reestablishment of a ‘democracy that delivers’ in Mali.
