Carlos Alvarado, Elbegdorj Tsakhia and Jigmi Yoser Thinley joins the Board of Directors

We are pleased to announce that Carlos Alvarado, Elbegdorj Tsakhia and Jigmi Yoser Thinley have joined the Board of Directors of Club de Madrid.

Their extensive experience and unwavering commitment to democratic values, global cooperation, and sustainable development will provide invaluable insights to our mission of fostering dialogue for democratic leadership and inclusive policy solutions.

Carlos Alvarado served as President of Costa Rica from 2018 to 2022. During his tenure, he championed ambitious decarbonization policies and played a pivotal role in advancing climate action and digital transformation. As a Member of Club de Madrid, he has been actively involved in initiatives addressing global challenges, including discussions on democracy and climate change.

Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj is a former President (2009–2017) and Prime Minister (1998; 2004–2006) of Mongolia. A key figure in Mongolia’s peaceful democratic revolution, he has been a staunch advocate for human rights, environmental protection, and the abolition of the death penalty. Elbegdorj has been recognized globally for his leadership in promoting democracy and sustainable development.

Jigmi Yoser Thinley served as Prime Minister of Bhutan from 2008 to 2013. He is renowned for integrating the philosophy of Gross National Happiness into governance, emphasizing holistic development, cultural preservation, and environmental sustainability. Thinley’s leadership has been instrumental in promoting well-being and democratic values on the global stage.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Helen Clark and Kim Campbell for their dedicated service on the Board of Directors, concluding their terms in December 2024. Their contributions have been instrumental in advancing our mission and supporting democratic leadership worldwide.
