Navalny’s Passing: The Ongoing Struggle for Democracy in Russia

Club de Madrid is deeply concerned and saddened by the death of Russian opposition activist and tenacious defender of human rights and democracy, Alexei Navalny. His passing marks a critical moment in the fight for freedom and respect for human dignity. A stark reminder of the urgency to defend these fundamental values.

A harsh critic of Vladimir Putin, serving a 19-year sentence in a penal colony north of the Arctic Circle, Navalny passed while imprisoned under some of the harshest conditions in Russia.

His death compels us to continue supporting the work of others who, like Navalny, face repression in the exercise of their fundamental rights.

The international community must remain vigilant and committed to promoting democracy, human rights and justice.
