The panel, moderated by Kathy Sierra, Senior Fellow in the Global Economy and Development Program, Brookings Institution; former Vice President for Sustainable Development at the World Bank, counted with the introduction from Nikhil Seth, Director, Division of Sustainable Development, UN-DESA; Janos Pasztor, Executive Secretary, UN Secretary-General’s High-level Panel on Global Sustainability (GSP); and Veerle Vandeveerd, Director, United Nations Development Programme Environment & Energy Group.
During this debate attended by UN, national government representatives and key stakeholders, the Club de Madrid Members urged nations to agree on concrete decisions that will allow the planet to ensure that sustainable development is fully and effective implemented, by ensuring access to sanitation and sustainable energy as means for poverty eradication, as well as to reinforce the social pillar of sustainable development through the implementation of Shared Societies. In addition, a strong call for low-carbon economies was made, by ensuring that the next UN Climate Change Conference in South Africa delivers a strong agreement, as a key step towards Rio+20.
The Club de Madrid, based on the current projects and activities that is implementing, submitted a series of recommendations as its contribution to the Rio+20 process.
