Vaira Vike-Freiberga then became the country’s President —the first female Head of State of the former Soviet bloc— and helped Latvia join NATO and the EU

In a conference on the inclusive economy held in London attended by union representatives, practitioners from civil society and international organizations and British MPs, Former Prime Minister of Bhutan Jigme Thinley said decision-making on the economy is better “when all stakeholders are represented”. The Member of WLA-CdM also discussed the Bhutanese Happiness Index, presented as an alternative to GDP to measure a country’s success, and attended a presentation of the Global Peace Index at Westminster 

Laura Chinchilla advocates for inclusive migration in Dominican Republic

The Vice President of WLA-CdM, Laura Chinchilla, met with Dominican President Danilo Medina, Vice President Margarita Cedeño and Minister of Foreign Affairs Miguel Vargas to share the best international recommendations for an inclusive and humane approach to migration. Chinchilla also shared recommendations from Costa Rica, the country she led as President between 2010 and 2014.
