Juan Manuel Santos and 10 former presidents lead the NGD Roundtable about the future of democracy in the Americas

Beyond the outcomes already reached throughout NGD’s project development, a new debate will be held in which not only the political and social dimensions of the Americas but also the relations between democratic governance and market economy will be the center of the discussions.  This NGD Roundtable of the Americas will also incorporate the results of the Forum of Santo Domingo, organized by the Funglode Foundation and International IDEA. A Forum held on the Dominican capital on January 28-30 and named “Time for Reforms”: What Should Latin America do to Become a more democratic, prosperous, equitable and safe region?

The debate, will aim to identify practical and transformative democratic ideas in the region, taking into account three main dimensions: New democratic values and institutional reforms, Progress towards equality and political, economic and social inclusion and new democratic and effective public policies. Moreover, sub-regional groups of countries facing similar political and economic situations will be considered.

The Club de Madrid Members participating in this Rountable are: Jorge Quiroga, Vicente Fox, Ricardo Lagos, YvesLeterme, Belisario Betancur, César Gaviria, Alejandro Toledo, Osvaldo Hurtado, Luis Alberto Lacalle and Leonel Fernández. 

On August 26, the President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos as well as Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary General of the SEGIB (Secretaria General Iberoamericana) will participate – alongside the Club de Madrid Members – a Public Event in the Teatro Colón of the Colombian capital city where the conclusions of the forum will be revealed and a debate will follow, around the topics of “Next Generation Democracy” and “Peace, Public Security and Democracy in Latin America”.
