Club de Madrid Members join the “Free Bazoum” campaign

Club de Madrid is deeply concerned about the ongoing detention of Niger’s democratically elected President, Mohamed Bazoum, and his wife, who have been held under house arrest since the coup in July 2023.

In support of the “Free Bazoum” campaign, initiated by Vanguard Africa and endorsed by numerous global leaders, several of the Members of Club de Madrid have actively joined the petition advocating for President Bazoum’s liberation. This collective action underscores our unwavering commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law.

These Members stand in solidarity with the international community’s call for his immediate and unconditional release, including the United Nations, which has denounced his detention as arbitrary. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, in an opinion cited by AFP, has affirmed that “the appropriate measure would be to immediately release Mr. and Mrs. Bazoum and grant them the right to seek reparation.” The United Nations Human Rights Council has also rejected the justifications provided by Niger’s military junta, underscoring the illegality and cruelty of President Bazoum’s continued captivity.

The unjust detention of President Bazoum not only violates his personal rights but also poses a significant threat to democratic governance and stability in West Africa. We urge the international community to intensify efforts to secure his release and to support the restoration of constitutional order in Niger.
